Sicilian & Italian Wine
Guide
Basic Wine Guide These are some wines
from Italy. This list is here strictly as a guide, so that if you go to a
restaurant and/or wine store and want an Italian wine, you can pick it out
by name and know something about it before hand. Only those which are
hyperlinked are those which we have tried, and even then, we do not make
recommendations, only comments, you try these wines at your own risk.
Also, the APPROXIMATE cost per bottle is retail NOT what you will find
in a restaurant, a restaurant will not double, but actually triple the price
of a bottle of wine. So a $45 bottle of wine that is "unbelieveable"
to you when you taste it, is actually something you can get for $12-15 in
your local liquor store. How do you avoid this? You go to restaurants
where you bring your own bottle of wine. Just because they don't have
a liquor license does not mean that the food is not good, it may be less
convenient, but not only is it cheaper, but its better to bring your own
bottle rather than chose from a list that is overpriced and not very good.
ALso, you will notice that most of these wines are roughly in the $10
price range. Personally (and this is strictly a personal statement and
preference) I do not think you have to spend more than $25 for a good bottle
of wine, retail. I have had chianti classico (my favorite) from the
$60 bottles and did not care for them. The wine should be about the
food, not the food about the wine. So get a bottle of wine that will compliment
the food and it should not be more than $25-50, tops. Its NOT a matter of
being frugal, its a matter of being sensible, its just not worth it, save
the money for the food and the tip.
White wine should be drank in the year
it is vinted. So if it is the year 2002, you should be drinking white
wine from the year 2001.
