St. Apollonia
Patron Saint of Dentists
Feast Day Celebrated on February 9
Died 248 AD
An elderly woman, Apollonia was persecuted like most saints, because she was Christian. One day she found herself in the middle of an angry crowd that brutalized every Christian they saw. When they abducted Apollonia, the first thing they did was knock out all her teeth and then dragged throughthe outer city of Alexandria where they made a huge bonfire. She was given the option to live by public denouncing her faith but she remained strong in the face of death. Because of the way she was brutally beaten with all of her teeth being knocked out, Apollonia is known as the patron saint of dentists. She is often depicted as holding a dentist's instrument or as wearing a necklace of her own teeth around her neck.
