Lady Luck in the Corner

Capitalizing on the deep inky night
When the train inches like a symbiotic caterpillar
And there is no way to be sure who is watching as I sleep
Detection exists just below these tremulous lashes
Clutched under my chin like a prayer
My book of countenance
Skirting the coast of our Normandy bloodlines
Their long white veins grasping from an endless channel
To suck me in and under
I will be remembered
Not as a member of this heritage
When I am without it
Without the tome
I walk dark and marked
Marbled and mottled and
Dampened by the pain of the rain
Inveigled like the Queen of Spades
I’ll walk off the plank
Resembling so much Joan of England
