Southern Italy Catching Up with the North
New technologies are taking a hold in Southern Italy, according to new research from Svimez. When it comes to Satellite Dishes and Pay TV, penetration is much higher among Southern families than those of the Center-North.
The new study reveals that 14% of Southern families have a satellite dish (compared with 3% five years ago), and 11% have pay TV.
As for PC penetration, 38% (compared with 17% in 1995) of Center-North households and 33% (compared with 8% in 1995) of Southern ones have PCs. Internet penetration is 20% (compared with 0.4% in 1995) for Center-North households and 15% (compared with 0.1% in 1995) for those in the South.
The Svimez report concludes that the difference in family structure between the South and the North plays a decisive role in the diffusion of new technologies in the South. Southern families tend to be larger with more children who encourage the purchase of new technology items.
1, 2, 3... TECH!
The number of Italian children with PC and Internet access is on the rise, according to a new report. The study by Italian research firm Eurispes found that over 1.5 million Italian children aged between 6 and 11 use a PC, primarily to play games and access information on the Web. Only 10% of students aged 11 and over use the Internet. According to Eurispes, Internet and PC adoption is higher among younger children because computer skills are now taught in primary schools, while older children have to teach themselves.
