The Department of Italian Studies at McGill University is holding a one-day conference on Saturday, October 13, 2001, on the theme "Sicily: Myth, Metaphor, Reality". Its purpose is to present to a general public some lesser-known aspects of Sicilian culture, through the examination of representations of Sicily in literature, cinema and other forms of cultural expression.. Often stereotyped, the image of Sicily should emerge from these explorations considerably enriched historically, psychologically and socially. The conference is not meant to be a conversation amongst specialists, but is addressed to anyone interested in Italian culture who would like to know more about Sicily and its power to fascinate, in the contemporary world as much as in the past. Our speakers are drawn from the local academic community as well as from abroad, and will speak in English, French or Italian.
