Istat Says One Family in Ten Lives in Poverty

In Italy one family out of ten lives in poverty or in great poverty. These are the data emerging from an Istat survey on "Families, Habitation and Security for Citizens", according to which the poor families number 2,203,000 (10.3% of the total). The data, compared to 1999, indicate that 1,617,000 families (7.5%) have difficulty affording clothes, and 4.8% found medical expenses to be a problem; 3.4% were not able to pay the rent and 2.3% could only afford bread. Economic disadvantages in Southern Italy are double that of Northern Italy.
