Pope Condems Israel's Extremism
Pope John Paul II called a meeting between Middle East Catholic religious leaders to address the future of the Christian population living in Israel.
In his opening address the pontiff stated that the State of Israel seemed to be "crushed by two different extremisms which, independent of the reasons that fuel them, are disfiguring the face of the Holy Land."
He continued saying "Unfortunately, we are meeting at a moment that I do not hesitate to define as dramatic. How we would have liked to see our Jewish and Muslim brothers walk side by side with us [in a united pact of love] that would give back to the Holy Land its true face of being a crossroads of peace and a land of peace."
The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Angelo Sodano stated that "the restoration of a climate of peace" was a first priority. He declared that even though "deep wounds" had been inflicted, there remained no other alternative for the Israelis and Palestinians than to learn to co-exist "with equal rights and equal duties."
