One Fourth of All Italian 18-Year-Olds Risk Illiteracy

In a study conducted by the National Institute of Evaluation (CEDE) of 650 18 year-old males called up for military service in 2000, one in four of them was at risk of becoming illiterate adults. The director of the CEDE acknowledged that the results were troublesome because so many of them failed to understand even a simple electric bill or advertisement. About 20% of those interviewed had attained a professional degree and 65.5% had only earned a middle school diploma.

OCSE: Italian Students Failing to Make the Grade

According to a study conducted by the Organization for EconomicCooperation and Development, the average 15-year old Italian student's education is not up to par with that of 31 other countries.

In reading comprehension, Italian teenagers ranked 20th, while in science they came in 26th. Students who scored the best overall were from Finland, while Japanese and Korean teens excelled in math and science.
