OPERATION RETRIEVAL BEGINS TO FIGHT BRAIN DRAIN
An attempt has been made to stem the flight of persons with higher education who, in search for higher wages and better study and research opportunities, go to foreign countries. As much as 1.5 trillion lire will be allocated in the next three years in the form of grants and fellowships to create new study and research opportunities within Italy. A committee of experts has determined that the use of future funds should come as awards in line with European standards with a three-year renewable contract in the sectors of research and teaching.

VENETO REGION ASKS FOR MORE IMMIGRANT WORKERS
In a reaction to the recently published law that sets immigrant quotas for the current year, Rossi Luciani, president of the Veneto Industrial Federation has announced that the immigration quotas set for the Veneto region will be insufficient. He affirmed that the requirements for a healthy continuation of production in his region added up to two-thirds more than the allotted number. Mr. Luciano declared that "Insufficient entrance permits for immigrant workers in our region would endanger the healthy development of our businesses; therefore we ask the future government to do everything possible to assure an increase in entrance quotas."

EXHIBIT ABOUT ROMAN SETTLEMENT IN PORTO RECANATI
An exhibit about public and private life in the Roman settlement of Potentia opens today at Castello Svevo in the coast town of Porto Recanati. The birthplace of poet Giacomo Leopardi in the province of Macerata, in Marche, offers the results of a 20-year excavation of a nearby Roman colony which was distinguished for its wealth and refinement, being in contact with the city of Rome as well as being connected with the Adriatic Sea. In his History of Rome, Livy (Titus Livius) reported on this community which was settled in the second century before Christ and survived till the early Middle Ages. The exhibition, which gives the visitor an inside look of Potentia¹s main structures, including the forum, the temple of Jupiter, the market place and several luxurious private villas, will remain open till October 31.

TWO OUT OF THREE ITALIANS AT RISK FOR HEART ATTACK
An alarming report was presented yesterday by the center for Cardiovascular Epidemiological Observation at a convention of cardiologists in Florence. Test results revealed that heart attacks were on the rise in Italy, with 70% of the Italian population being at risk for heart disease, and only 15% making life style changes for preventive care. A lack of knowledge coupled with harmful life style, lack of physical exercise (40% of the studied subjects didn¹t exercise at all), an overall increase of obesity, an increase of smokers, especially among the women surveyed, were mentioned as some of the causes for the increased risk. Another important factor is stress and in fact, the stress of an extra-marital relationship can lead to a heart attack, the researchers confirmed.

PRISONERS WHO WORK HAVE RIGHT TO PAID VACATION
Prisoners who work inside or outside prison and those who are in halfway centers are entitled to paid holidays. A special council has declared unlawful that part of Article 20 of the penitentiary code that denies annual vacation or paid leave to those detained who work within the prison organization.
