North Beach in San Francisco, California is built around Washington Square in the north section of town.  The Italian area is large and packed with cafes and authentic espresso bars.  This neighborhood tends to be haven for writers, neighborhood residents and the tourists.  Composed of northern and southern Italians, a tour of the area offers a huge variety of food shops, kitchenware shops, trattorias, and little shops on upper Grant Street that offer handmade clothing and leather coats, unusual fabrics, eclectic jewelry and vintage clothing that is a treat for the browser.  The area has bout 150,000 residents.  Like Manhattan's Little Italy, it borders Chinatown.  San Francisco has just recently replace Mahattan as the country's most valuable real estate, in other words, the most expensive.  There is a bocce ball court by Aquatic Park, Saints Peter & Paul is the local school and church, and there is the North Beach Playground fully equipped with basketball courts, swimming pool, tennis, open playground and more. Benjamin Bufano's Elefante is central to the small permanent collection. There are ongoing, diverse rotating  exhibits, as well as classes on all things Italian.
