1492 Christopher Columbus, sailing under the Spanish flag since his native Italy thought he was insane, arrived in Watling Island in the Bahamas. He originally set out to find a new trade route to India, and he first believed that he had he had found Asia. The world was still thought to be flat at that time and even his crew attempted mutiny when the trip went longer than planned and they were running short of food. He had left on August 3rd with 3 ships containing 120 men, the Pinta, the Nina, and the flagship Santa Maria.
