Probably the first movie that brought the real-life cosa nostra and mafia to reality on the screen.  This movie was put together with a bunch of screen tests featuring the role of Michael Coreleone as both Al Pacino and James Cann.  The truth is that the Paramount Studio never wanted Al Pacino in the main role.  They constantly tried to get Francis Ford Coppola to fire and replace him.  Additionally, the movies Godfather I and Godfather II were filmed back to back, and Coppola insisted on keeping Al Pacino in the lead.

Some Familiar Scenarios in the Godfather I

Corleone This province in Sicily outside of Palermo is actually called Corleonese, but, it is also said that the movie was actually shot on the East Side of the island of Sicily over by Catania.

The Godfather played by Marlon Brano could have been anyone, including fictional, but also could have been Caro Gambino.

Johnnie Fontaine The singer/actor who was blacklisted from a Hollywood movie:  Frank Sinatra (although some say Vic DeMone).

Moe Green was clearly Bugsy Siegel, who was killed the same way, a gunshot trhough the eye in his own home.

Hyman Roth Meyer Lansky was also quoted as saying "we are bigger than US Steel".  He also roamed from country to country for immunity but died of heart failure, not assasination.
