The Food: Hot Bread & Oil
When I was just a young boy, my mother would often take me to Calandra's Bakery in the North Ward of Newark. Today, its still one of the only Italian sections left, with restaurants like "A Taste of Sicily" and other such Italian social clubs and restaurants.
Very often, in fact, every hour on the hour, the bread would come out hot from the ovens. We would get the baguette "French" bread with seeds, and when we got home, we would cut a few inches off, slice it legnthwise and put in some extra virgin olive oil, salt and a little bit of pepper... it was heaven that had come in the simplest form. If you simply heat the bread, its not quite the same as fresh bread but give it a try... even give a sprinkle of oregano if you wish...
