The Food:
Ferragosto
Ferragosto always takes place
on August 15th. Here in the United States, if you are Catholic, it is known
as the Assumption of Mary (the day that Mary is admitted into Heaven). In
Italy, I don't know, although I have experienced it first hand in Sicily,
where there is naturally music, food and fireworks. They carry the
statue of the Saint Mary out of the church, and bring it through the town
or village while the fireworks go off above. I remember seeing "piccolo
pizza" which, of course, we would call a personal pizza here, but there they
were about 7" round and were only a dollar back in the early 1990s. Feasts
in Sicily were not a "gouge fest" of prices to raise money for the church,
or anyone, it was truly a celebration of the holiday. I remember the
pizzas having a slice of hard boiled eggs on it, as well as sliced olives.
