The Bar:
Gin
Gin can be traced back Holland in the 17th century. Dr. Franciscus
de La Boie, a medical professor at the University of Leyden, invented
Gin in 1650. It was originally intended used as medicine, ironically
enough, as a diuretic for kidney disorders. It is Juniper berries and
grain alcohol. Gin became very popular in the English foreign service
and in its colonies such as Bombay. They enjoyed it, as they do today,
mixed naturally with tonic water (which contains quinine).
