Liquors & Liquers
Amaro Mondtenegro
- Produced
in Caltanissetta, but exported from Bologna, it tastes like a cross between
the Sicilian Averna and the German Jaegarmeister, and, if you have ever had
violet candy or sen sen or C. Howards gum (purple chicklets) it has that
taste to it too. Its not as thick and lighter brown in color than
Averna.
Amaro/Amaretto - Almond and/or herb liquer served as a cordial,
in espresso, and/or in desserts. Look for
brands like Amaretto di Sorono.
Anisette/Anice -
Clear Italian cordial liquer made from the anis
seed, tastes like black licorice, very similary to sambuca but with less
alcohol, commonly used in desserts or with
Apertivo -
apertif, liquer
Averna - Sicilian
Amaretto, comparable to the German Jaegermiester.
Campari - A red, bitter cordial,
can be served in grapefruit juice or with soda
(www.campari.com)
Chenterba - this comes in a straw
basket.
Frangelico - Hazelnut
liquer/cordial, a nice after dinner cordial and/or with espresso or
coffee
Godiva -
Chocolate liquer, also available in white chocolate
flavor
Grappa - Fermented from the peels,
seed and stems of grapes, its perfectly clear in color. I am told that
the best grappa has a slight licorice taste like Sambuca, only not sweet
(try the South American Aguadiente Cristal liquor for a taste of licorice
without the sugary taste). I had for the first time in Sicily and almost
literally got sick, and I can drink vodka straight. But, they say its an
excellent digestive, I often joke that yes, it is an excellent digestive
because if you have it, you will throw everything up, no calories accrued.
I could be wrong.
Limoncello -
Cordial Spirit yellow in color and tastes like
lemons
Martini - Italian
brand of both sweet and dry Vermouth, from which the ever popular Martini
Cocktail has derived
Mellone - Melon liquer resembling the taste of cantelope
or melon
Mezzaluna
- One of the smoothest Vodkas around,
triple distilled/filtered, my favorite of the 30 I've tried (yes, I am a
vodka drinker).
Sambuca
- The most popular brand of Sambuca and the most authentic
is Molinari, but Sambuca Romana works fine too. If you order this in a
restaurant, you will typically see 3 coffee beans floating in it, they signify
health, happiness and prosperity, 3 is very often symbolic for many reasons,
but also because odd numbers are luckier than even ones.
Strega - Literally
meaning "witch" in Italian, this is a yellow bitter liquer cordial with a
unique taste.
Vecchio Amaro del Capo -
Literally means "old amareto of the captain" in Italian, this is
a light brown bitter liquer cordial with a taste very similar to
Strega.
Tiramisu - A cordial/after dinner drink
that tastes like the famous Sicilian dessert (espresso, chocolate, cappuccino
mousse)
Tuaca - Italian cordial liquer with
hints of vanilla and oranges
